Woodnotes is a Finnish family company founded in 1987 by textile designer Ritva Puotila and her son Mikko Puotila. It was the first company in the world to use paper yarn in a contemporary way in everyday textiles: carpets, blinds, panels, seating. It all starts with wet-strength kraft paper made from the coniferous trees of the northern forests. In Lapua, Finland, the paper is spun into yarn and partly dyed; the carpets are woven there too, then go to the sewing workshop where they are cut to size and finished.
The result is a smooth, compact surface: a paper yarn carpet does not produce or collect dust, because it is a natural, non-static material. That is why it works well even in the busiest areas of the home.
Alongside Ritva Puotila, the catalogue includes designers such as Harri Koskinen, Ilkka Suppanen, Hanna Korvela and the Italian Raffaella Mangiarotti. Woodnotes' work has received, among others, the German Design Award (Gold in 2021) and the Red Dot Award.
Woodnotes carpets can be ordered in custom sizes and shapes, in the colours you prefer and with different edge finishes: sewn edges or cotton edging, narrow or wide.
