Arflex Bonsai Sofa in Milan — Official Retailer

A seat as soft as a cloud, born from a reflection on Japanese aesthetics.

Claesson Koivisto Rune for Arflex, 2016 · By Mariani Design

The Arflex Bonsai is a sofa you recognise at first glance: a wide, rounded seat with a back that wraps just one side, somewhere between a sofa and a daybed. It is the work of the Swedish studio Claesson Koivisto Rune, from 2016. Here at Mariani, official Arflex retailers in Milan and Arluno, we explain its two versions, how to get a quote and where to try it.

The design: a cloud inspired by Japan

Arflex describes the Bonsai as the result of a reflection on Japanese aesthetics and culture. The seat has soft, curved shapes reminiscent of clouds: a single volume with no hard edges, which seems to rest lightly on its base.

Its soft silhouette suits both homes and hospitality spaces: a piece that works as the focal point of a living room, in front of a window or in a reading corner.

The designers

A Swedish studio working across architecture and design.

Claesson Koivisto Rune was founded in 1995 as an architectural office and works, in the classic Scandinavian way, across disciplines: architecture and design. Its built projects include the Sfera Building, a culture house in Kyoto.

The link with Japan returns in the Bonsai, designed for Arflex in 2016: a seat born from a reflection on Japanese aesthetics and culture. For Arflex the studio has also designed Tokio, Claudine and Edo.

Features: two bases, two characters

The Bonsai comes in two versions. On metal feet the seat seems to float and the sofa stays compact; on the wooden base it grows longer, and the base, wider than the seat, provides a surface alongside it.
