The Fiorenza was born in 1952 from a design by Franco Albini. Arflex calls it a symbol of comfort: in the 1950s it appeared in Pirelli advertising to show what foam rubber could do.
At the time foam rubber was considered the most technologically advanced material for upholstered furniture, and the Fiorenza was the proof: a soft, welcoming armchair with a silhouette you still recognise at first glance.
Franco Albini was born in Robbiate in 1905, moved to Milan in 1916 and graduated in architecture from the Politecnico in 1929. After working in the offices of Gio Ponti and Emilio Lancia, he opened his own studio in 1931, later joined as partners by Franca Helg and Antonio Piva.
From 1949 he taught at the universities of Venice, Turin and Milan. After the war he focused on museums and public transport: with Franca Helg he designed the stations of Line 1 of the Milan Metro, which won the Compasso d'Oro in 1964. For Arflex he designed the Fiorenza. He died in Milan in 1977.
