The Arflex Ben Ben is not a sofa you push against the wall: it draws a curve and arranges the room around itself. Cini Boeri designed it in 2009, reviving one of her projects from the 1970s. In 1974 Cini Boeri designed the Bengodi for Arflex. Thirty-five years later, in 2009, the Milanese architect took that model up again and reissued it as the Ben Ben: Arflex's choice, confident that it would be loved today as it was then.
The result keeps the convivial spirit of the 1970s: a long, enveloping seat designed for a group of people rather than for one.
Cini Boeri was born in Milan in 1924 and graduated in architecture from the Politecnico in 1951. After her years with Marco Zanuso she opened her own studio in 1963, working across architecture and design with a constant focus on the relationship between people and the spaces they live in.
In 1974 she designed the Bengodi for Arflex. In 2009 she took it up again and updated it: the result is the Ben Ben, chosen by Arflex in the belief that it would be loved today as it was then. Boeri won the Compasso d'Oro in 1979 and set out her method in the book Le dimensioni umane dell'abitazione (1980).
The curve is the heart of the design. The units sit side by side along the arc and build long compositions, all the way to a full semicircle: a sitting area that becomes almost a place of its own, ideal in the middle of a large room or in front of a window wall.
