The Arflex Giulietta is a 1958 armchair that needs no introduction for anyone who
loves Italian design: it is signed by BBPR, one of the studios that shaped that
design in the first place. Here at Mariani, official Arflex retailers in Milan and Arluno, we tell
you how it is made and what it costs, and we let you try it in our showroom.

The story: BBPR and an armchair fit for a cover
The B.B.P.R. studio designed the Giulietta in 1958 with the traits
that set Arflex production apart in those years, as the company itself puts it: a close study of
the line and absolute comfort, without neglecting elegance.
Two years later the armchair made the cover of Domus, issue 372 of November 1960:
for a seat, that says it all. Today the Giulietta is still in the Arflex catalogue, among its icons.

The designers
Four Milanese architects who helped found Italian design.
B.B.P.R. was founded in Milan in 1932 by Gian Luigi Banfi, Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso, Enrico Peressutti and Ernesto Nathan Rogers: a studio of architects, urban planners and designers who played a leading part in the debate of the modern movement.
After the war they drew up the A.R. plan for the reconstruction of Milan (1946) and curated the exhibition The shape of usefulness at the IX Triennale (1951). In the same years they designed the Spazio office furniture for Olivetti and seating for Arflex, some of it still in production, like the Giulietta.

Features: an enveloping back and a light base
Look at it in profile: the high back opens into two wings, the armrests are slim and turn slightly
outwards, and the seat rests on a light base. It is an armchair that welcomes you without taking
over the room, as much at home in a reading corner as in a living room.
Fabric upholstery — wools, bouclé, chenille, jacquard, canvas and textures from the Arflex range.
Or leather — for a more tailored Giulietta.
Base — black metal or wood, in wengè, chocolate and oak finishes.
