The story: the Hall series and the Compasso d'Oro

It is the end of the 1950s when a series of armchairs and sofas designed by Roberto Menghi and called Hall joins the Arflex collection. The design dates from 1958.

The following year, in 1959, the Hall armchair received an honourable mention at the Compasso d'Oro: a recognition that places it among the significant pieces of post-war Italian design.

The designer

A Milanese architect of homes, cinemas and objects.

Roberto Menghi was born in Milan in 1920, studied at the Liceo Parini and graduated from the Politecnico in 1944, after formative years in England. As an architect he designed private homes, such as Casa Rocca in Milan, and public buildings including the French high school in Milan, the Cinema Arlecchino and the glass pool at the Milan fair.

In industrial design he won two Compasso d'Oro awards and designed glassware for Bormioli, lamps for Fontana Arte and Omicron, the Guscio prefabricated house for Zanotta, and seating for Arflex. Among them is the Hall series, which received an honourable mention at the Compasso d'Oro in 1959.
